Terms

Last updated 6 September 2026

DRAFT. Written in plain English and accurate to how the site actually works, but not reviewed by a lawyer.

What A Legend is a place to put memories of someone who has passed. It is free. Using it means agreeing to what follows.

Posting

You do not need an account. You do need to be 13 or over, and what you post has to be yours to share.

  • Only upload a photo, video or recording you took or have permission to use.
  • Think about the other people in it. A photo of a night out has other faces in it, and they did not choose to be on a public page. If someone asks to be taken out, we will take them out.
  • Write about the person who passed, not at each other.

What is not allowed

  • Anything illegal, or anything sexual involving minors, which we report.
  • Harassment, threats, or abuse aimed at the family, the person who passed, or anyone else here.
  • Impersonating someone. Using a nickname is fine; pretending to be a specific other person is not.
  • Advertising, spam, scraping, or automated posting.

Removing things

You can delete your own post from the same device for 24 hours after writing it. After that, ask us.

The person who set a memorial up can remove anything on it, close it to new posts, or ask us to take the whole thing down. We can also remove anything that breaks these terms, and we do not have to explain ourselves first if something is urgent.

Family comes first. If the immediate family of the person memorialised asks for something to be changed or removed, we will act on it, even if someone else created the page. See Takedown.

Private posts

If you mark a memory private, it goes only to the person who manages that memorial. Nobody else sees it, including other people who post there. We do not use it for anything else. It is still stored on our systems, so please do not put anything in it you would not want stored.

Your words stay yours

You keep ownership of everything you post. You give us permission to display it on the memorial you posted it to, and to show a preview of it when someone shares a link. Nothing more than that.

If we ever offer printed keepsakes made from a memorial, we will ask separately and clearly before your words or photos are used in anything printed or sold. We will not apply it backwards to things already posted.

The site itself

We try to keep memorials online and intact, and we intend them to last. But this is a free service provided as it is, with no guarantee of uptime and no warranty of any kind. Keep your own copies of anything irreplaceable. To the fullest extent the law allows, our liability to you is limited to what you paid us, which is nothing.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon, USA.

Changes

We will update the date above if these change, and say so on the site if the change matters.
